Recognizing the importance of agriculture to the area the Columbus Chamber of Commerce held their annual “Feed the Farmers” program. With the farm workers in the fields harvesting from dawn to dusk the Chamber prepares hamburgers and sausages for those working the fields. Members of the Shamrock 4-H Club joined with Matt Case Chairman of the Chamber Feed the Farmers committee to catch the trucks as they bring the grain to the Columbus Farmers Coop. Driver Dennis Spencer grabs the bag of burgers from Jade Ohmart. As of Tuesday afternoon the Farmer’s Coop has brought in 1.3 million bushels of soft wheat. Unique to Cherokee County soft wheat has become a larger crop than the hard wheat raised in most of Kansas.
The recent dustup over the operation of the Baxter Springs ambulance service was discussed Monday night at the city council meeting.
