ConveneChairman Cory Moates called the regular session of the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners (the Board), to order at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2024, in the Commission Room, #109 of the Cherokee County Courthouse located at 110 W Maple St., Columbus, Kansas.

Titans host Columbus Invitational Track Meet

The Columbus High School Track and Field Team hosted 12 SEK and CNC League Teams for the annual Columbus Invitational Meet, Tuesday.

Missourians in concert at FBC in Crestline

The Missourians gospel singing group will be in concert at the First Baptist Church of Crestline Sunday evening, April 21 at 6 p.m.The group has dedicated themselves to excellence in the presentation of the gospel in song. Anyone who hears them will come away blessed.

Newcomb College famous for arts, crafts movement pottery

Ceramics collectors know Newcomb College for its famous pottery. From 1895 to the 1940s, students at the college, which was, at the time, Tulane University’s coordinate women’s college, decorated the ceramics that Newcomb Pottery sold.

Museum curator becomes detective

I have added another job to the curator of the museum. It is being a detective. Well, in my case it may be just plain nosy.I was cleaning out some drawers and found some interesting artifacts. Along with the artifacts was the accession sheet.

Southeast students place at TRL art fair

Art students at Southeast High School recently attended the Three River’s League Art Fair.The event was held April 3 at Jayhawk-Linn.Local artist, Kate Freeman with The Artificers in Fort Scott was one of the presenters.Additional artists also also had discussions with the students.

SE FBLA students place at State event

The State Future Business Leaders of America Conference was held April 4 and 5 in Topeka. Five Southeast High School students made the trip. Four students placed in the top 10 in their events. Rowdy Robertson, Human Resource Management, third place and Accounting II, tenth place.

Honeybee theme for Baxter PEO meeting

The honeybees were flying at P.E.O. Chapter BT’s April 1 meeting. Members met at 12:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist Church in Baxter Springs. The hostesses were Clara Wassom and Judy Brewster. Tables were decorated with a honeybee theme.

Gray named March Lion of the Month

The Lion of the Month award for March was presented to Columbus Unified High School senior Luke Gray at a recent Columbus Lions Club meeting.In addition to being a member of the LEO Club, Gray has been active in a number sports including golf, football and basketball.
