Curb repairs approved in business area

Reconstruction of the curbing of the 200 block of South Pennsylvania, both West and East sides was approved by the Columbus City Council Monday night as presented by Randy Coble, City Property and Parks Director.

Life sentence in indecent liberties case

Aaron Michael Martin accepted a plea agreement on October 8, 2020 for taking indecent liberties with a child. Martin was sentenced Thursday to life imprisonment with a minimum of 25 years before parole. Judge Robert Fleming also ordered that he would be monitored during that parole time.

Columbus Fire Department received a $5,000 grant to purchase two Toughbook laptop computer units to increase efficiency and enhance safety for firefighters and the public. The grant was received from the Foundation Rural Service an arm of the National Rural Broadband Association.

The Columbarium purchase approved for placement in the Columbus Cemetery at the October 25 Columbus City Council meeting was rescinded Monday night and was made through a local business.

State requirements limiting cities and counties to spending only what has been budgeted, the Columbus City Council approved amending their 2021 budget last week to spend funds which they ended the year with in excess of the amounts they expected.

Scott Eugene Carter, 47, was arrested Wednesday by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies on charges of possess opiates, opium, narcotic drug or certain stimulant and use or possess drug paraphernalia for use in the human body and is being held in lieu of $3,000 bail.
