Recycling bins may be discontinued

The county recycling bin in Columbus has been removed by the county due to the condition of the trailer. County Road Supervisor Cody Zook, said the condition of the bin and the cost of transporting it was affecting his budget.
Recognizing the importance of agriculture to the area the Columbus Chamber of Commerce held their annual “Feed the Farmers” program. With the farm workers in the fields harvesting from dawn to dusk the Chamber prepares hamburgers and sausages for those working the fields. County threatens to defund Ambulance District 3

The recent dustup over the operation of the Baxter Springs ambulance service was discussed Monday night at the city council meeting. Commissioner Cory Moates told the Baxter Springs Council that the commissioners had discussed discontinuing the county subsidy to the service.

Cherokee County Jail Report

Joe Wesley Brumbalow, 37, was arrested Monday by Galena Police officers on charges of driving under the influence; alcohol or drugs and is being held in lieu of $1,000 bail.

Dylan Guy Price, 26, was arrested Sunday by Chetopa Police officers on charges of disorderly conduct and was released on $450 bail.

Fundraiser planned for Ewens

A benefit dinner for Sherry and Randy Ewen will be held at the 4H Building Wednesday, June 30. For a donation, lunch of pulled pork, chips, dessert and bottled water will be available. This event will be drive-by or delivery only and will begin at 10:30 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m.

Baxter welcomes new business to Chamber

There is a new insurance agent in Baxter Springs. The Baxter Springs Chamber of Commerce welcomed Grant Deardorff and his staff at the new State Farm Agency with a ribbon cutting and open house. Deardorff and his staff attended the recent Baxter Springs Spring Fling/ Cowtown Days Celebration.

Park ranger visits Johnston Public Library

Coyote, fox, and skunk were among the topics at the Johnston Public Library Tales and Tails program June 17. Park Ranger Sarah Martin with the George Washington Carver National Park taught the children about animal pelts, claws and beaks.
