July 4 is just four weeks away, and the firework funding is short just $3,000. Have you helped with a donation or attending one of the cookouts? Final payment must be made to the fireworks company by June 24.

Record turnout at fishing tourney

A record turnout for the annual West Mineral Eagles Lodge, “Kids Fishing Tournament” Saturday. There were 325 entries signed up for the tournament ending at 5 p.m. Saturday. This was twice as many participants as they had last year during the pandemic peak.

Prizeweek consolation prize winner

There was no grand prize winner in the Prizeweek Puzzle contest last week. The puzzle continues to baffle entrants. Mark Winter, a former grand prize winner, was the closest to winning last week missing just two of the preferred answers.

Old Miners Day is held at Big Brutus

Despite the good weather the number of attendees was lower at the Big Brutus old miners fish fry and reunion. Some blamed the decrease on the lack of publicity and others thought the pandemic had taken it’s toll on the aging coal miners.

Columbus man flown to hospital after car fire

An automobile fire Wednesday evening sent a Columbus man by med-flight to the hospital for burns to his lower arms and hands. Columbus firefighters arrived shortly after 7 p.m. at 816 North East Avenue to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

The Cherokee County Democrat Central Committee will resume their monthly meetings June 10, at 7 p.m. in the Community Building in Columbus. “Come out and help us celebrate our victories,” said Steve Langerot. “Refreshments will be served.
