Swimming pools throughout the county will be opening on Saturday despite the rain and cooler temperatures. The new municipal pool in Baxter Springs will open Saturday with regular pool hours, of noon-7 p.m. daily. Admission will be $3 per person.

An early morning house fire on 72nd Street in Lowell Monday resulted in the death of recent Riverton High School graduate despite the futile life saving efforts of a Baxter Springs police officer. Briann King, 17, died from injuries she suffered in the fire.

Officer receives recognition

A recognition award was presented to Baxter Springs Police Officer Seth Brown Tuesday night during the Baxter Springs City Council meeting by Police Chief Russ Harper. The recognition was in commemoration of the officer’s attempt to save the life of Briann King in a Lowell fire Monday morning.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help in locating two escaped inmates. Mark Gerald Hopkins, II and Michael Wayne Martsolf escaped the Cherokee County Jail in Columbus around 11 p.m. Monday.
