Shooting suspect arrested

After a domestic disturbance in rural Baxter Springs Monday morning, two men were taken into custody. At around 9:30 a.m., deputies responded to a domestic disturbance after a woman had sustained injuries in a physical attack, where the alleged assailantis also suspected of discharging a firearm.

Council discusses buying multiple size trash bins

Trash talk, consumed much of the Columbus City Council work session Monday evening as the size and number of trash containers should be purchased by the city next week. In their test last year, the city bought 107 of the containers that would hold 90 pounds of trash.

New micro-grant plan for city homes

An exterior home improvement micro-grant was received with warm acceptance by the Columbus City Council on Monday evening, despite the fact the plan could not be approved until next week.

Possible power line across county revealed

A high voltage power line may cross Cherokee County from the power plant at Burlington and terminate just 2,000 feet into Missouri just east of Pittsburg, the Cherokee County Commissioners were told Monday.

Appointments made by Commissioners

Four positions which are usually appointed each year by the County Commission were left unfilled after Monday’s meeting. Cody Zook was appointed as the Road and Bridge Supervisor, Cord Mayes was re-appointed to Noxious Weed Control Director.

The Columbus City Council is expected to decide how many of each size of the trash dumpsters to order for the next round of deliveries. Some rules are being discussed as to how many dumpsters each customer will be able to have. They had already decided extra trash containers could be purchased.
