Life is precious. Certainly, any present of value is appreciated; no greater gift exists than the gift of life (Mark 8:37). Any sensible person in possession of a valuable item treats it with care and respect. That being said, a lot of heads get scratched in amazement when observing the reckless and disrespectful handling of the only existence an individual will ever have (2 Sam. 14:14).
