Tommy McNeer Bailey, 43, was arrested Wednesday by Quapaw Marshals on charges of domestic battery; physical contact in rude manner and is being held without bail. Seaniece Kelly Irene Davis, 26, was arrested Wednesday by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic battery; knowing or reckless bodily harm, possession of certain hallucinogenic drugs and use or possess drug paraphernalia for use in the human body and is being held without bail.

The graduation season will come to a close Sunday as Galena holds their commencement and baccalaureate services in the afternoon. On Saturday both Columbus and Baxter Springs will have their graduation ceremonies.

Special mining program presented at Museum

A special program being presented in conjunction with the quarterly exhibit “SE Kansas Coal Camp – West Mineral”, which is on display through June 23. Sunday, May 19 at 2 pm this special program will be presented.

Galena grad to speak at commencement

One of Galena High Schools most outstanding alumni will be speaking to the graduates at his alma mater at the graduation on Sunday, May 19. Matthew Glades graduated with the class of 2006 after being a threesport student-athlete and two-sport All-State athlete for the Bulldogs.

Sportsmen’s fishing derby set Saturday

The annual free kids fishing derby will be held Saturday at the Sportsman’s pit near West Mineral. The fishing derby has been held for over 20 years and includes prizes to youngsters in the age groups.

Consider tile drainage during wet spells

James Coover After two years of dry soils, we finally have gotten into a spell of rainy weather. It’s been more than enough in some places, and has led to water logged soils that have been hard on crops or getting in a sprayer or drill. Some fields take a lot longer to dry out and some have ponded areas that hardly drain at all. We aren’t far from full-season soybean planting either. Its years like this one where farmers consider installing tile drainage. Ironically, tiles are best installed in the dry periods, like we’ve had plenty of the past two years, in preparation for wet springs like this one.
