Students and their parents were introduced the D.A.R.E keepin’ it REAL program by Resource Para Shanel Bullard and School Resource Officer Anne Sharp.Parents were told the goal was teaching young people skills to lead safe, responsible and drug-free lives.

Library receives $10,000 grant

The Columbus Public Library has received a $10,000 gift from the Carnegie Corporation of New York in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.The 112 year old Columbus Library was built with a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie.

Beware area residents and businesses about a recent scam that occurred in Columbus involving an individual impersonating a federal law enforcement officer.In this incident, an employee at a local business received a call from a person claiming to be with the FBI.

For the eighth consecutive year former congressman Jake LaTurner has donated 50 turkeys to the Columbus Thanksgiving baskets.It was eight years ago LaTurner expanded his Galena Thanksgiving Foundation into Columbus and Baxter Springs Thanksgiving programs from the original Galena program.

Columbus Fire Department was dispatched to 1411 E. Sycamore St. in Columbus just before 2 a.m. Monday for a working structure fire. Crews arrived on scene to very heavy smoke and flames shooting out the roof of the structure. The home was occupied and the homeowner safely exited upon arrival.
