Vera Maybell Hanigan, 92, died at the family farm February 14, 2024 in Oswego, doing exactly what she loved best, tending the farm.
Vera was the last child born to Clifford Paxton and Dolly Mae (Beck) Hanigan September 15, 1931, at home in Fairview Township, Labette County.
Known to many as Maybell, but to family as Vera, she was reared and educated in Labette County and was a graduating member of the Class of 1949 from Labette County Community High School in Altamont.
Vera made her home in Kansas City after graduation to work for Hallmark Card Company from 1950 through 1961. In 1961, after her father’s passing, she moved back home to help with the family farm and became Labette County’s Register of Deeds; an elected position she had the honor of occupying from 1962 until her retirement in 2001.
In addition to her parents, Vera was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include her sister, Sarah Ann Sullivan of Owasso, Oklahoma and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all including friends, neighbors and past co-workers.
Graveside funeral services will be held at Lake Creek Cemetery in Bartlett Saturday, February 24 at 11 a.m. She has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home in Oswego.
