Teen opportunity for civic discourse training

K-State Research and Extension’s state 4-H team and local Wildcat District have teamed up with the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy (ICDD) to provide an interactive virtual leadership training focused on facilitation and deliberation skills.
In previous years, the Chamber of Commerce has hosted a cookout before the Columbus Christmas Parade to raise funds for the Fourth of July Celebration. The 2022 July 4 event will be organized and coordinated by members of the Columbus Fire Department. They plan to have a cookout December 1 before this year’s Christmas parade to start fundraising for the fireworks display.

Nominations sought for Chris Award

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the Chris Award. Each year, after the announcement of the winner, we hear someone say they should have nominated someone. If they are not nominated, they can’t be the Chris Award winner.

Shop local this holiday season

Did you know? Your dollars spent in local Columbus businesses have three times the impact on our community as dollars spent at national chains. When you shop local, you help create jobs, fund more city services through sales tax, invest in neighborhood improvement and promote community development.

Time to submit dates for 2022 calendar

A new year will be upon us in just a few short weeks. Has your organization set dates for the large events for 2022? After setting the dates for 2022, you need to contact the Chamber office, in order to have it listed in the 2022 Calendar of Events brochure.

Fire department will take reins of July 4 celebration

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that the Columbus Volunteer Firefighters will take on the Fourth of July Celebration for 2022. They plan to enlarge the activities for the coming year to include games and food trucks, along with fireworks.

Communities should play the hand they are dealt

I saw this excellent quote the other day by David Brinkley, he said, “A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him”. I would like to substitute the word ‘man’ with the word ‘community, or local media company’.

BHS pep club supports team through final tick of the clock

It was 47 degrees and raining, but that did not stop the Baxter Springs Lions football team and Baxter Springs High School Pep Club from showing up full of spirit for their last game of the season. The Lions started the 2021 season with 21 players, mostly underclassmen.

The cold rainy weather did not stop the Baxter Springs Lincoln Elementary students from enjoying a fun time of Trick or Treating. All the Trunk or Treat participants simply moved inside. The students were able to walk around the gym and collect their treats.
