Lennie Lee Westervelt, 84, rural Cherokee, died at 8:18 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Girard Homestead Assisted Living in Girard.
Born January 30, 1942, west of West Mineral, Lennie was the son of Maurice Lee “ML” and Genola (Richardson) Westervelt. He attended Star School until his family moved to Cherokee in 1955. He then attended school in Cherokee and graduated from Crawford County High School in Cherokee.
He and his brother, Alvin farmed and ranched their entire life.
Lennie was instrumental in starting the Crawford County Fire District 3, where he also served as Fire Chief for many years.
Lennie and Gloria Mae Antonette were united in marriage August 12, 1961. She preceded him in death November 18, 2022. He was also preceded in death by his parnets and a sister.
Survivors include son, Derek Westervelt of rural Pittsburg; daughter, Tianne Westervelt of Cherokee; brother, Alvin Westervelt; step-granddaughter, Darcey O’Brhym; and two step great-grandchildren, Henry and Margot O’Brhym.
No services are planned at this time. Private family burial will be in the Cherokee City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg.
