History of Baxter schools presented at PEO meeting

A special program on the history of the first schools in Baxter Springs was presented at the November 6 P.E.O. Chapter BT of Baxter Springs meeting. The group met at noon in the Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist Church. Hostesses were Linda Crotts and Alma Cook.

Columbus woman wins photo contest

A Columbus resident has two winning photos in the The Kansas Department of Agriculture announced the winners of the 2023 KDA Photo Contest. Katey Freeman was recognized for her first place and second place photo on KDA’s Facebook page this month.

Dobkins is October Lion of the Month

Columbus Lions Club has announced the October Lion of the Month. Columbus High School senior Chesney Dobkins is a member of LEO Club. She is a member of the Titan Spirit Squad made up of both cheerleaders and the dance team. Dobkins performed in the 2022 Shrine Bowl.

‘Preserving the Holidays’ two day workshop planned

K-State Research and Extension – Wildcat District and the Independence Community College FabLab are working together to provide a fun, two-day, gift-making workshop - Preserving the Holidays. The first workshop meeting will be held on December 5 from 6 – 8:30 p.m.

4-H members recognized for achievements at breakfast

At the annual 4-H achievement breakfast Ryleigh Holmes was recognized as the Junior 4-Her of the Year. Holmes is an active member of Spring Valley Sparklers, attends nearly every meeting and participates in all club activities.

Cherokee County Horse Project awards presented

Awards were presented to members of the Horse Project at their recent banquet. Montana Elmer was recognized for Reserve mini pony, Reserve gelding and Reserve timed event ages 14-18. Debbie French and Jenna Pritchett presented the awards.

Southeast inducts new members to NHS

An induction to Southeast High School’s National Honor Society was held Monday, November 6. To become a member of NHS, students must have a grade point average of at least 3.
