Reservations required for dinner meet

All members of the Valley of Southeast Kansas Lodge of Perfection are asked to attend the Stated Dinner and Meeting Thursday, November 3 at the Armstrong Masonic Lodge, 3105 North Joplin Street, Pittsburg. Social Hour begins at 5:30 p.m., Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m.

FCC fall chili, soup luncheon planned

It’s that time of year when the First Christian Church will host the annual Fall Chili and Soup Luncheon. The drive thru only event will be held Friday, November 4 from 10:30 a.m. until sold out.
George Kasten (center) was recently honored with an early 90th birthday party. While his birthday is in December, the party was held early so his family in Wisconsin could be present. Kasten was also presented with a Quilt of Valor for his military service at the party. Kathy Lunday and Janie Fletcher presented the quilt.

The return of the Pancake breakfast to the Columbus Day Festival drew a large number of visitors. Sausage and biscuits with gravy were also on the menu. After an absence of a couple of years, First Methodist Church hosted the pan- cake breakfast during the Annual Columbus Day Festival.

Fundraiser luncheon set for tomorrow

The pulled pork benefit dinner for Susan Campbell and John Richards is tomorrow (Wednesday) October at the 4-H Building. It will be drive thru and delivery only from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. For delivery in Columbus on the day of the dinner, please call 620674-1612.

In the Columbus Days 5k run the female 50-59 age group Jackie Burns took first in a time of 28:55 and pictured is second place finisher Loretta Bass in 29:39 and Shannon VanBecelaer finished third in a time of 42:42.

Baxter UMC pig roast tomorrow

The members of the Baxter Springs United Methodist Church are having their 30th annual Pig Roast Saturday, October 22 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. as a carry-out event. Each take-out container will hold shredded pork, baked beans, potato salad and a slice of bread.
Columbus Fire department visited Highland and Park Elementary schools for National Fire Prevention Week. Firefighters spoke to students about fire safety, the importance of smoke detectors, knowing how and when to call 911 and developing family escape plans. They were able to give out over 300 fire prevention packets to students. “This is one of our favorite parts of our job, interacting with the kids and hopefully making a positive impact in their life,” said Fire Chief Steven Burton.
