The second of the spiritual works of mercy is to instruct the ignorant. Like the first (to warn the sinner), this must be entered into with a spirit of mercy and humility. No one thinks of himself as ignorant, so our teaching may come across as pedantic and pharisaic. There is often also the further difficulty presented by one’s social status or station in life.
