Girls Scouts will hold cancer awareness walk

After being inspired by the work of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts of the USA on March 12, 1912. Juliette passed away from Breast Cancer 15 years later at the age of 66.

The Columbus Public Library will be open to the public, with a five person limit. Mondays 9 p.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursdays 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Wednesdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. By appointment only. Thursdays 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays 9 a.m.-noon. Saturdays 10 a.m.-noon.

Weir Homecoming celebration offers fun, food, music

Performing the National Anthem, Tiffany Monroe, was joined by Taylor Monroe, Emma Memering, Zane Memering, Ryan Monroe. They also led the Pledge of Allegiance before the start of the Weir Homecoming Parade on Saturday. The group are members of the Faith Tabernacle Church.

SHS Yearbook receives donation

New photo editing hardware, camera lenses and a new iPad will be purchased for the Southeast High School Yearbook Program. Funds for the purchases are possible due to a donation thanks to local farmer Jeanna Jones.

Servers during the “Back the Badge”

Servers during the “Back the Badge” barbeque sandwich luncheon were kept hopping by a steady stream of customers. The crew worked early morning to late in the afternoon. Proceeds from the fundraiser go to support the Baxter Springs Police and Cherokee County Sheriff’s reserve units.

Homecoming at Riverton High School is planned for Friday, October 1. Queen candidates include Cali Bocovich, senior; Calsea McQuary, junior; Noel Hedrick, sophomore and Lexie Mallatt, freshman. Coronation will be held at 6:30 p.m. before the football game against the Erie Red Devils.

Lincoln PTO golf tourney raises funds

Each autumn, the Lincoln Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) in Baxter Springs usually holds a school carnival fundraiser. However, with the guidelines of the COVID Pandemic last year they decided to have an outdoor event, putting together a four person golf scramble.
