Labette Community College (LCC) Tau Theta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society attended the inaugural Heartland Region Convention on March 3-5 in Wichita.

Annual conservation dinner meeting recognizes area farms

The traditional Conservation dinner was missed last year due to the pandemic but was re-started this year and was enjoyed by community members Cherokee County Conservation District board members served chicken dinner to the those attending the annual meeting and dinner.

Titans of the Week

The Columbus Unified High School Titan Band was honored to be chosen as one of seven to perform for the Kansas Music Educators Conference in late February at Wichita. They are being recognized as Titans of the Week.

Park Kindergarten celebrates with royal tea party

PEO hears about women’s heart health

An informative presentation on women’s heart health and signs to look for, was presented by Clara Wassom at the Chapter BT of P.E.O. International meeting February 20. The group had dessert in the Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist Church in Baxter Springs.

PreK, Kindergarten round up at USD247

If you have young children, and live in the USD 247 school district, it’s time to think about PreK and Kindergarten Round Up for the 20232024 school year. Beginning Tuesday, March 28 at 8:30 a.m., Southeast Elementary School, 303 S. Humbert in Weir will begin the process.

Pancakes

Pancakes and sausage were on the menu at the Neutral Church supper held recently. Pastor Neal Anderson prepares to flip the hotcakes as other church members attend to other tasks.   Members of the Neutral Church hosted a pancake and sausage supper recently. It was all hands on deck.

Rowland retires after 20 years with JPD

Following a 35-year career in the public safety field, Sloan Rowland will be retiring from Joplin Police Department June 1. Rowland began his career as an EMT with the Cherokee County Ambulance Service. He became a patrol officer with Galena Police Department in 1987.

Members of the Columbus Lions Club

Members of the Columbus Lions Club held their annual bean and soup fundraiser recently. Among those helping included Regina Jameson, David Holmes Sheriff David Groves, Janet Lindsey, Brad Gleason and Mayor Grant Speith. The annual event is always popular with the community.

Library board meeting March 6

The March 6 Library Board meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by President Curtis Wheatley. Also present were board members: Becky Glover, Maggie Mooney, and Linda Griffitt. Library staff member present was Lauren Dainty.
