Melton, Kennedy families have reunion

The Melton and Kennedy 70th annual family reunion was held Sunday, July 23 at the Lincoln Center in Pittsburg. There was 85 present and 38 families represented. Brett and Kelsy Hamblin from Pittsburg were the newlyweds. Bob Thomas, 86 was the oldest.

During the summer when I’m lucky enough to shop in a major bookstore, I check out the tables labeled “new releases”, “staff favorites”, and “beach reads”. “Beach reads” is a quirky label if you live in the middle of the country like we do, but I guess that’s better than advertising “No Brainers”.

During the Cherokee County Fair a few classes did not have many entries. Results in those classes have been announced. In Astronomy Hudson Asher, Lone Elm Beavers, was the Grand Champion Spacetech, Astronomy, Robotics and Rocketry. Beckett Asher, Lone Elm Beavers, was the Reserve Champion.

Results have announced in the Fiber Arts and Clothing and Textiles classes. Montana Elmer, Spring Valley Sparklers was the Grand Champion in Needle Arts. She received a purple ribbon in Ethnic Fiber Arts. Reagan Holmes, Spring Valley Sparklers received a blue ribbon in Needle Arts.

Veterans pavers available

It will soon be Veterans Day. It is not too late to purchase a granite paver to honor a family member or friend who is or was a veteran. Granite pavers will be engraved for the Veterans Memorial located at the northeast corner of the square by the Cherokee County Court House in Columbus.

Josh Lacen attended the Farm Bureau pancake breakfast Friday, July 28. Options included fresh made pancakes, hot off the grill sausage with butter and syrup. Members of Cherokee County Farm Bureau provide breakfast each year for the members of 4-H and their families.
