Projects sought for Community Day of Service

The Community Day of Service will be held Wednesday, October 8, noon to 2:50 p.m. under the sponsorship of Matt Ross’ Columbus High School Technology classes.“We are seeking projects for students to complete this year.

USD 493 accepts grant for sports

Four properties are in the process of being purchased by the Columbus Unified School District 493 .The Board of Education heard Superintendent Dan Grundy report on the status of the properties at 527 West Olive, 813 and 821 South High School Ave., and 137 South East Avenue (the former VFW).

Chamber supports Carpino food drive

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce, is partnering with Mike Carpino Ford to help fill the Columbus First United Methodist Church Food Pantry.The “Fill a Ford” program is expected to be the world’s largest dealer food drive as all the Ford nationally are participating to fill their local food pantries.

Editor’s Note --A special section in today’s News Report tells much of the story of Weir. Most of the material was from the book written by the late Henry Stricklin which he published for the nation’s Bicentennial in 1976. His wife Saundra Stricklin served as mayor of Weir.

Michael Jrone Williams, 55, was arrested Sunday by driving while suspended, use or possess drug paraphernalia for use in the human body and vehicle liability insurance required and is being held in lieu of $3,000 bail.

Stacy Travis Still, 57, was arrested Sunday by Oswego Police officers on charges of driving while license cancelled, suspended or revoked and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and was released on $2,053.50 bail.

Two arrested after vehicle pursuit

On September 5, deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver failed to stop and deputies engaged in a pursuit. During the pursuit it became evident that the suspect vehicle was having mechanical issues.
