Fundraisers discussed at Mercy Auxiliary June meet

Fundraising possibilities and the fair were on the agenda at the June 16 Columbus Mercy Auxiliary meeting. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Melissa Torchia.Fifteen members were present. Torchia led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the Auxiliary Prayer.

Cherokee County Jail Report

Anthony Joseph Simon, 45, was arrested Monday by Galena Police officers on charges of failure to appear and is being held in lieu of $111 bail.Nathan Eugene Williams, 32, was arrested Sunday by Galena Police officers on charges of disorderly conduct and was released on $500 bail.

Continental Congress establishes United States flag design

The Continental Congress established the design of the United States flag on June 14, 1776.

Commission accepts EPA reimbursment

Following lengthy discussions with a representative of the US Environmental Protection Agency Monday morning, Cherokee County Commissioners agreed to accept the agency’s offer of $20,305.06 as a reimbursement for the county’s restoration efforts on Southeast Blackjack and Southeast 90th Street.

Kansas attorney is confirmed by Senate

The U.S. Senate confirmed on a party-line vote one of three Kansans nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as judges in U.S. District Court.Nominee Jeff Kuhlman, an attorney from Great Bend, was confirmed 52-46 by the U.S. Senate.

Rainbow Bridge was one of several stops made by a caravan traveling from Oklahoma to Missouri on Friday afternoon. Outside of the caravan, many international travelers stopped by Route 66 on their way to watch the FIFA World Cub being held in Kansas City.

Columbus boil order rescinded

The boil order instituted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment following a major water leak in Columbus on June 15 has been rescinded.Rescinding of the order was announced last week after being in place for only four days.
US Senator Dr. Roger Marshall visited with Farmer’s Co-operative General Manager Matt Case on Friday June 19. Case gave a tour of the co-operative’s Agronomy location south of Columbus, including the $5 Million addition to the fertilizer plant.
