Parsons munitions plant celebrates expansion

A celebration of the completion of a major expansion of munitions production capabilities at Day & Zimmermann, in partnership with the U.S. Army with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony.The Parsons ammunitions plant was a major supplier of ammunitions to the armed forces during WWII.

Columbus annual clean up continues

It’s Spring, and the City of Columbus has set the 2026 annual clean-up. As usual the trash truck will be in each ward two days beginning in Ward one April 13, 14. Ward two will follow on April 15, 16 and Ward Three will be picked up April 17 and 18.

Columbus PEO holds officer installation

An installation service was held at the regular business meeting of Chapter V March 5. The meeting was held at Nancy Evan’s home with co-hostess Pat Spriggs who also furnished the raffle prize. The same officers willing to continue their duties for another year.There were lots of things to snack on.

Mining camps were abundant throughout Cherokee-Crawford coalfield

Genealogy CornerThere were over one hundred coal mining camps in the Cherokee-Crawford coal field. Some of them had colorful or very interesting names.Camps such as Capaldo and Ringo, in Crawford County, were named for the owner of the land which was leased or purchased by the coal companies.

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas is accepting applications for its 2026 session through Thursday, April 30. Applications are accepted after that date, but on a spaceavailable basis. The event is set to be held Sunday, May 31, through Saturday, June 6, at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
