October 31 trunk or treat in Columbus

Calling monsters, clowns, superheroes and all other costumed characters. Columbus Chamber of Commerce would like to invite you to attend Trunk or Treat Sunday, October 31. Dress up in your most creative attire and join the fun on Pine Street on the Columbus Square. Event will begin at 4 p.m.

With the State offices closed for the past year, Attorney General Derek Schmidt, was reduced to stand-up comedy for his speech Monday night at the Cherokee County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting.

Detour changed

The railroad crossing east of U.S. 400 east of K-7 highway at Cherokee will not be closed today as KDOT had originally released. The closure had originally been planned for last week but was postponed until Monday October 25-27.

FB Farm Family of the Year named

The 2021 Farm Bureau Farm Family of the Year, Ronnie and Sharon Johnson, were recognized at the organization’s annual meeting Monday night in the Columbus High School Auditorium. Ronnie Johnson began farming with his father in 1959 and started farming on his own in 1972.

Stolen vehicle recovered

A 2021 Chevrolet truck stolen from inside the Columbus city limits early September 25 has been recovered. Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies located the vehicle Monday. It had been abandoned in the northeast part of Cherokee County.

Baxter Springs leader Bob Abbott dies

The Baxter Springs community lost a tireless worker on Thursday with the death of longtime funeral home operator, George Robert (Bob) Abbott. He was well known in the community for his involvement in local philanthropic activities and community service activities.

Area Accident Report

A one-vehicle accident occurred September 26 at approximately 5:50 a.m. on Highway 160, four miles south of Liberal, Mo. A 2007 Jeep Liberty driven by a 17 year old female from Galena was traveling east. She traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a guardrail.
