Dexter Opela, 63, Columbus

Dexter Wayne Opela,63, of Columbus died Sunday, October 22, 2023. Born Monday, August 8, 1960, in Muskogee, Okla., Dexter was the son of Albert Wayne and Wilma Jean (McCrackin) Opela.

Dexter and Sammye Dawn Hicks were united in marriage June 24, 1988, at Chandler, Oklahoma. She survives of the home.

Dexter was a proud graduate of Oklahoma State University. He spent his career from an early age in the construction industry where he gained the respect and admiration of those he had an opportunity to work with. He was known for his work ethic and his drive for excellence, as well as the ability to bring out the best in those who worked under him. Dexter’s passion for construction can be seen in several homes and businesses around the community.

Dexter is deeply loved by his family who he poured his heart into giving opportunities he didn’t have growing up. When he wasn’t working on projects, he enjoyed fishing and relaxing around the pool and fireplace. His witty sense of humor was always a crowd pleaser and will be greatly missed.

In addition to his wife, Sammye, Dexter is survived by two sons: Chad Michael Opela (wife Nicole) of Holden, Mo. and Colton Doyle Opela of the home; daughter, Krista Denise Hulsey (husband Michael) of Hockley, Texas; one brother Michael Wayne Opela of Oklahoma City, Okla. and five grandchildren: Aspen Opela, Sage Opela, Madison Hulsey, Kaleb Hulsey and Hunter Hulsey.

A visitation will be held at Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus, Kansas. Date and time to be announced.
