Donald Earl Scales, 82, Girard

Donald Earl Scales 81, Girard, died at 12:10 a.m. Sunday February 18, 2024 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Mo. following a long battle with cancer.

Born February 12, 1943 in Crawford County, Donald was the son of Glen Wilford and Julia Faye (McColm) Scales. Donald lived in this area most of his life. Donald graduated from Cherokee High School in 1961 and later joined the United States Army Reserves, serving from October of 1963 to October of 1969.

Donald and Linda Lee Clugston were united in marriage January 30, 1965 in Crawford County. She survives at the home in Girard.

Donald worked as a Coal Miner for 23 years for Mine 19 Big Brutus and LaCygne. He and his wife Linda later owned and operated J and W Poultry in Girard.

Donald was of the Christian Faith; he was a member of the SNPJ and President for 10 years; American Legion in Cherokee; American Legion Girard; a Mirza Temple Shriner; Masonic Lodge member; ELKS Club 412; ER two years; Lifetime Member Big Brutus Inc.; Cherokee Gun Club; Tank Pond Member and a member of the West Mineral Eagles.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by brother Maurice Glen Scales and sister Judy Scales.

In addition to his wife, survivors include children Glen W. Scales and wife Sherry of Allen, Texas and Donna L. Platt and husband Steven of Butler, Mo.; brother Melvin Scales and wife Mary Jo of Pittsburg; grandchildren Jenny Jo Burdine, Kaleb Platt, Breanna Jones and Tessa Webb; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday February 21 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg with Pastor Duane Elmore officiating.

Burial will follow at the Monmouth Cemetery in Rural Crawford County.

In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to the SNPJ Scholarship Fund and/or Girard American Legion Post 26 Building Fund.
