Weir man arrested for attempted murder charge

In response to an armed domestic disturbance call May 8, Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a location in rural Weir. Upon arrival, deputies located Boyce Earl Nevills, Jr., 56, along with a female at the residence.A firearm and a knife were seized as part of the investigation.

A public hearing has been scheduled for tonight (Tuesday, May 12) by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) to discuss a request filed December 31, 2025, by The Empire District Electric Company (doing business as Liberty).

Genealogy CornerLast Saturday I spent an enjoyable time at Hosey Hill Cemetery. The Southeast Middle School eighth graders conducted a very informative walking tour titled “Heroes of Hosey Hill”. The students presented the stories of fourteen veterans and one other prominent person.

There was a threat made against Columbus schools via a phone call Wednesday. The same threat was apparently made in an automated format against numerous southeast Kansas schools. Columbus Police department, along with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, responded to each campus location.
