Mary Jane George, 82, of Chetopa, died June 16, 2022. Born March 10, 1940, Mary Jane was the daughter of Lillian (Oakley) and John Rice. She had 14 brothers and sisters. She was married to Marvin George. They later divorced. She and George Sands were companions for 12 years.
Mary Jane attended Chetopa High School. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Parsons. She was a part of the Oswego Senior Citizen Center. She loved to play bingo, play cards and was a member of a bowling league. She loved spending time with Carol McKenley. She loved frogs and turtles. She loved her family and spending time with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids.
Mary Jane is survived by her daughters Tammey Haraughty (husband Rex) and Vicky Stapleton (husband Mark) both of Oswego and Ann Erwin of Hallowell; and son John George (wife Angie) of Rushville, Indiana. Five siblings and lots of grandkids and great grandkids also survive.
Mary Jane was preceeded in death by her parents, son Marvin Eugene George, son-in-love John Erwin, 10 siblings, granddaughter Heather Marie Haraughty and great granddaughter Makayla Jane Haraughty. Graveside services were held Monday, June 20, at Sherman City Cemetery. Pastor Randy Frazier officiated. Pallbearers for the service were Jeremy Erwin, Justin Stapleton, Chance George, Christopher Stapleton, Will Wilson, and Zack Haraughty. Honorary pallbearer, Jeff Haraughty.
