Barbara Jo (Houser) Capron, 76 of Columbus, died Thursday June 16, 2022. Born November 12, 1945 in Columbus, Barbara was the daughter of Wayne and Josephine (Chase) Houser. She was a graduate of Cherokee County Rural High School, with the class of 1962.
Barbara and her high school sweetheart, Evan Daniel Capron were united in marriage June 5, 1963. They were married for 54 years, before his death August 14, 2017. From 1972 to 1990, they resided in Richardson, Texas.
In 1974, as their youngest daughter entered school, Barbara entered the workforce, working for Richardson National Bank; starting in the book keeping department and working her way up to Executive Vice President. She worked for the bank until 1990 when the family moved back to Southeast Kansas.
From 1993 until 2010 Barbara worked as the Office Manager for the Mercy Clinic in Columbus. Barbara was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. She worked as a volunteer for the Methodist Thrift Shop. She also served her community as a member of the Columbus City Council for four years. After her retirement, Barbara enjoyed several trips within the United States, visiting Hawaii, Washington DC, New York, Orlando, Fla. (Disney) in 2016, Memphis, Tenn., Alabama and Florida. She enjoyed playing Bridge, reading, walking, Elvis, Neal Diamond, and listening to the band play for the Columbus Titan Football games.
Barbara is survived by two daughters Dana Wellmeier (husband, Brian), of Columbus and Julie Simpson (husband, Scott), of Corinth, Texas. Grandchildren, Jana Allison and Dylan Koehler, both of Columbus, Katie Scoles, Sam, of Denton, Texas Sarah Simpson, Jonathon Ward, of Corinth, Texas, Preston Simpson, of Flower Mound, Texas; great grandchildren: Josephine Scoles and baby Ward who is due to be born in December; siblings Dora Dunlap, (Steve) of Columbus and Wesley Houser (Jan) of Joplin, Mo. along with a host of nephews and nieces.
Funeral Services will be at Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus, Friday, June 24, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 23, at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
