Max Terril Byrd, 88 of Galena, died at 10:40 a.m. Sunday, August 7, 2022 at Medicalodge Nursing Home in Columbus. Born in Galena October 19, 1933, Max was the son of Jay Fayette Byrd and Bessie Lee (Ford) Byrd. They preceded him in death. Max was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Marjorie Dean; and one brother, Jerry Byrd.
Max served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. He later attended Pittsburg State University where he graduated with a master’s degree in music education. He had worked as a music teacher in Neodesha and Joplin, Mo. before retiring in the early 1980’s. He was a member of the Galena First United Methodist Church for many years.
Cremation has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena. No services are planned at this time. Private burial of ashes will take place at the Byrd family plot at Oak Hill Cemetery of Galena. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
