Wilmetta Sternes, 100, Galena

Wilmetta Sternes, 100, of Galena, died Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at her home following a sudden illness. Born October 22, 1921 in Galena, Wilmetta was the daughter of Samuel and Lilly (Carey) LaTurner. She has been a life-long area resident

Ẇilmetta worked as a waitress at Reed’s Café before becoming a Tax Assessor. She was a member of the VFW, holding all local offices before being elected as the state president. She enjoyed gardening and going fishing whenever she could.

Wilmetta was married to Ray Calvin Means. He preceded her in death in 1960. She later married Kenneth Sternes in 1967. He preceded Wilmetta in death September 3, 2010. Wilmetta was also preceded by her parents, her son, Dale Means and by six sisters and three brothers. Wilmetta is survived by her son; Don Means (wife Vicki) of Galena; two daughters; Carol Kennedy of Galena, and Linda Henderson of Joplin, Mo., Seven grandchildren; Rob, Deanna, Christopher, Michelle, Erin, Russell and Cheryl, several great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, November 1, at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena.
