Stephen E. Smith, 77, of Baxter Springs, died Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at his home. He was a beloved husband, father, brother. Born April 12, 1944, Steve was the son of Earl and Imogene (Edens) Smith. He was the youngest, and as he would tell it, the most humorous of their three children.

Larry Wayne Madden, 78, of Baxter Springs, died Thursday, September 2, 2021, at his home in Joplin, Mo. Born March 19, 1943, in Picher, Okla., Larry was the son of Jessie Lee and Dorothy (Hodges) Madden. He was the second of three children.

James D McFarling, 72, of Galena, died at 4:53 a.m., Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Galena Nursing Center following an illness. Born January 8, 1949, in Columbus, Jim was the son of Ivan Lester and Lucy Luella (Loucks) McFarling. He was a lifetime area resident.

Marvin ‘Buss” Strobel, 91,Girard

A celebration of Life for Marvin “Buss” Strobel will be held Friday, September 17. The Military graveside service will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Fort Scott National Cemetery in Fort Scott. Followed by food and celebration at the American Legion George C. Brown Post 26 on 144 E 47 Hwy in Girard.

Father Gary Kennedy, Joplin, Mo.

Father Gary Grant Kennedy, 81, of Joplin, Mo. died August 30, 2021 with his loving wife Carol by his side. He was born to Max Kennedy and Katherine (Petty) Kennedy February 22, 1940 in Joplin, Mo. Gary and Carol Rae (Means) Kennedy were united in marriage August 6, 1960 in Galena.

Linda Ligon, 74, Springfield, Mo.

Linda Gaye Ligon (Taylor), 74, of Springfield, Mo. (formerly Columbus), unexpectedly died during a short illness at Mercy Hospital. Born November 30, 1946 in Columbus, Linda was the daughter of Frank and Edith Taylor. Linda and William H. Ligon were united in marriage August 10,1974.

Betty Ryan, 85, Quapaw, Okla.

Betty Ilene Ryan, 85, of Quapaw, Okla., formally of Baxter Springs, died Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at Higher Call Nursing Home, in Quapaw, Okla. Born June 19, 1936 in Yuma, Colo., Betty was the daughter of Orville and Florence (Roberts) Ping.

Charles Franklin “Jonesy” Jones, 82, of Pittsburg, died Friday, September 3, 2021. He was born April 19, 1939 in Columbus, to William and Nora (Fraizer) Jones. They preceded him in death.

Klonie Earl Smith, 79, of Commerce, Okla., died Friday, August 27, 2021 near Galena. Born January 11, 1942, in Commerce, Okla. Klonie was the son of August Leonard and Elnora (Reed) Smith. He worked for B.F. Goodrich until his retirement.

James A Smith, 75, of Columbus died Friday afternoon at Mercy Hospital, of Springfield, Mo. following an illness. Born June 15, 1946, in Pittsburg, Jim was the son of James A Smith Sr. and Wilma E (Kennett) Smith. He had lived in Columbus since 1976 moving from Pittsburg.
