A donation from the Columbus Lions Club to the Fire Up for Fireworks was presented to Fire Chief Steven Burton at a recent meeting. Lions attending included Mike White, Grant Spieth, David Groves, David Holmes, Burton, Steve Jameson, Buddy Derfelt and Mark Winter.

Pastor Cody Graves and members from the First Christian Church clean up their community garden to prepare it for the next season. During the summer months they distribute free fresh herbs and vegetables from the garden to anyone in need.

Pre-school students

Pre-school students from Becca’s Daycare listen to a story at Johnston Public Library. Story time is held each Tuesday from 10 a.m. -10:30 a.m. 

Favorite comic characters used in making toys

Comic characters are often used as models for toys, because they are already favorites of children. One group of toys was based on children’s books by Palmer Cox (1840- 1924), an author who was born in Quebec, Canada, and lived in Panama and San Francisco as a railroad contractor and carpenter.

Zombie 5K overall winners

Trick or treaters from Good Shepherd Day Care took a tour around the Square for Halloween. The youngsters were dressed like cartoon characters, super heroes, princesses, witches and in other unique costumes.

Baxter Springs PD gives plush animals to children

During this time of Thanksgiving and buying new toys for your children, please remember your gently used Teddy Bears, stuffed or plush animals can be donated to the Baxter Springs Police Department.

CUHS honors veterans with breakfast, special program

Emotional acts recently captivated a local community. Columbus Unified High School held a breakfast and assembly for Veterans Day in their school this year. Patriotic presentations like musical performances, slide shows and flag displays all punctuated the messages at the heart of the holiday.

The Baxter Springs High School honored 15 of their own United States Veterans during their Veterans Day Breakfast and Program.
