Bristow remembers fairs from his youth

Editors Note: Several years ago Columbus News-Report columnist Homer Bristow jotted down the high points of the Cherokee County Fair and Reunion from his unique memory bank. Bristow’s death in January 2013 ended the popular “Just Thinkin’” column of the lifelong Columbus area resident.

CUHS Senior, Avery Campbell received multiple scholarships during the Senior Assembly at the high school gymnasium, May 14. The Class of 2021 Valedictorian was active in band, Student Council, National Honor Society, TRI-M, Scholar’s Bowl, Math Team, Stem Club and Junior Leadership.

The Cherokee County/Columbus and Baxter Springs Girl Scouts if the Missouri Heartland are again preparing for the annual Girl Scout fair kitchen. The fair kitchen will be open Monday through Saturday July 19-24, the week of the fair, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

During the recent Independence Day bazaar on the Johnston Library grounds in Baxter Springs David Adamson purchased a bag of popcorn from Shaeanna Clapp. The stand had lemonade in addition to the popped corn. The parade sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce was well attended.

I recently saw a simple, yet excellent marketing campaign by Americas Newspapers that said, “Shop Local, Eat Local, Read Local”. Nothing could be more critical for a local community than this simple statement.

The Columbus Public Library will be open to the public, with a five person limit. Mondays 9 p.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursdays 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Wednesdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. By appointment only. Thursdays 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays 9 a.m.-noon. Saturdays 10 a.m.-noon.
