In the one -mile fun run as part of the Fourth of July Firecracker 5K first place in the 8 to 12 age group Addison Queen, 11 ran the course inside the rock wall at the park in 18.06. Sheriff David Groves presented the certificates.

It was a cool night in Baxter Springs and a good start to the holiday weekend. The Baxter Springs Fire Department and Fire Auxiliary brought one of their fire trucks to the city pool and sprayed water on the kids as they swam. About 100 swimmers joined in this nighttime swim.

Former County Counselor Barbara Wright was presented a plaque recently by County Commissioner Myra Carlisle -Frazier for her service to the county. The County Counselor is the legal advisor to the County Commission. Wright held that position for five years. She is also is the Columbus City Attorney.

New tonometer ordered for Mercy

At the June 15 Columbus Mercy Auxiliary meeting at City Park, Angie Saporito reported the events held on the anniversary of the tornado went well. She told the group the tonometer (device used to measure eye pressure) has been ordered and will be a welcome addition to the hospital in Columbus.

Cherokee County 4-H has selected nine-year-old Brooklyn Paxson as the July member of the month. Paxson is a member of the Spring Valley Sparklers Club. Her 4-H projects include sewing, buymanship, fiber arts, foods, horse, swine and beef.

Cornhole tournament rescheduled Saturday

After being canceled on the original date due to weather, the Baxter Springs American Legion Auxiliary will be hosting a cornhole tournament this Saturday, July 10 at Kiwanis Park Pavilion in Baxter Springs. This will be a team tournament, no singles allowed. Sign up begins at 9 a.m.

The Columbus Public Library will be open to the public, with a five person limit. Mondays 9 p.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursdays 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Wednesdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. By appointment only. Thursdays 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays 9 a.m.-noon. Saturdays 10 a.m.-noon.
