Spring, world coming back to life

The birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and the bees are buzzing. What does this all mean? Spring is here and the world outside is coming back to life. Officially, spring is from March 20 to June 20. Here in Kansas, this also means that the growing season is starting if you grow your own.

Area schools get ready for Pre-K, Kindergarten round up

Park Elementary School in Columbus will hold their Kindergarten and preschool roundup by appointment. Students enrolling in Kindergarten must be five years of age by August 31. Pre-K screening students should be four years of age by August 31.

PSU announces scholarship recipients

Chick day at the Baxter Springs Coop featured chicks of all kinds and four different ducks were among the available items Coop employee Jocee Weston holds one of the chicks. The chicks were produced by Heartland Hatchery in Amsterdam, Mo. where they hatch 5,000 chicks per week.

Five new members were inducted into the Southeast High School National Honor Society Tuesday, March 16. Members of the Southeast chapter serve as role models for others. They have strong academic records and many are leaders in other groups and organizations.

New titles at Johnston Public Library

Johnston Public Library in Baxter Springs is now open with temporary hours, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Appointments are no longer necessary and curbside service is still available. Masks, social distancing and strict cleaning measures are still being practiced.

An upcoming Drive-By pulled pork Fundraiser Luncheon was the main topic at the March 16 meeting of the Columbus Mercy Auxiliary held at St. Rose Parish Hall. The meeting opened with members repeating the Flag salute. Vice-President, Paula Langerot, read the Auxiliary Prayer.
