LCS Bears take MCL championship

Life Christian’s Junior Division (age 12 and younger) team outdistanced two other schools Saturday at Ottawa to take the Midstates Christian League Music and Arts Championship for the second year in a row.

Bunco games continue

Twenty-two bunco players attended the March 23 games. Including a newcomer, Brenda Boyd. Winners included Maedeen Back with the most wins; Marilyn Morris with the most losses; Barbara Poor with the most Buncos and Rosalie Peterson had the last Bunco.

Sweating causes problems for evergreens, shrubs

Several people have called this week concerned for their hollies and other evergreen shrubs, noticing that the leaves are presenting with dry, crispy margins and tips, and excessive leaf drop. The reason for this? The leaves are sweating.

Annual Methodist Church baked potato fundraiser is a smash

All hands were on deck at the annual First United Methodist Church baked potato feed. Workers kept things running smoothly March 19 as orders came in for the potatoes with toppings. This year the event was drive by or carry out.

Area students named KU National Honor Scholars

This spring, the Kansas Honor Scholars Program, which marks its 50th anniversary as a tradition of the University of Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment, honored more than 3,600 high school seniors throughout Kansas for their academic excellence and achievement.

Lacen named Lion of Month for March

Academic, musical and athletic excellence are all characteristics Dixee Lacen strives to achieve. Lacen has been named the Columbus Lions Club Lion of the Month for March. In addition to being a member of the LEO Club, Lacen has accomplished what very few high school athletes have achieved.

Easter egg hunt planned at West Mineral Eagles

An Easter egg hunt is planned Saturday April 3 at the West Mineral Eagles. Age groups are zerotwo; three-five; six-eight and nine-11. The hunt will begin at 10 a.m. There will be a grand prize for one child in each age group. West Mineral Eagles is located at 106 Olive in West Mineral.

BHS students want to ‘egg your yard’

Surprise you children Easter morning with a yard full of candy-filled eggs. The Baxter Springs High School class of 2023 is having an Egg My Yard fundraiser. For $20 you can get two dozen eggs or $10 per dozen with a two dozen limit. The deadline to order is April 1 at noon.
