PreK, Kindergarten round up at USD247

If you have young children, and live in the USD 247 school district, it’s time to think about PreK and Kindergarten Round Up for the 20232024 school year. Beginning Tuesday, March 28 at 8:30 a.m., Southeast Elementary School, 303 S. Humbert in Weir will begin the process.

Pancakes

Pancakes and sausage were on the menu at the Neutral Church supper held recently. Pastor Neal Anderson prepares to flip the hotcakes as other church members attend to other tasks.   Members of the Neutral Church hosted a pancake and sausage supper recently. It was all hands on deck.

Rowland retires after 20 years with JPD

Following a 35-year career in the public safety field, Sloan Rowland will be retiring from Joplin Police Department June 1. Rowland began his career as an EMT with the Cherokee County Ambulance Service. He became a patrol officer with Galena Police Department in 1987.

Members of the Columbus Lions Club

Members of the Columbus Lions Club held their annual bean and soup fundraiser recently. Among those helping included Regina Jameson, David Holmes Sheriff David Groves, Janet Lindsey, Brad Gleason and Mayor Grant Speith. The annual event is always popular with the community.

Library board meeting March 6

The March 6 Library Board meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by President Curtis Wheatley. Also present were board members: Becky Glover, Maggie Mooney, and Linda Griffitt. Library staff member present was Lauren Dainty.

Berklee Capron models

Berklee Capron models one of the 56 dresses donated for the 4-H Prom Dress Resale fundraiser. Money raised will be used for 4-H club needs.

Annabella Friend attended a Making Memories scrapbooking fair in Columbus recently. The fair was organized by Debra Messer.

Librarians attend training

The Summer Library Program: “All Together Now” was attended by Lauren Dainty of Columbus Public Library, Michelle Tavernaro of Weir Public Library, and Andrea Bresee of Johnson Public Library in Baxter Springs. Southeast Kansas Library System (SEKLS) sponsored the event.

Awards will be presented at dinner

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating the 95th Annual Dinner Wednesday evening, March 29. The Columbus Chamber of Commerce came about in 1899, by a group of concerned men wishing to promote Columbus and the surrounding area.

Knights of Columbus host weekly Lenten Friday fish fry

The Knights of Columbus and Alter Society of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church operate their fish fry as a complete team effort.
