Current Columbus Librarian Lauren Dainty has changed the library into more than a place to get a book. She has developed programs for youngsters on a regular basis. The above photo was taken during her first year.

Gas leak causes Galena evacuation

Some Galena residents had to evacuate their homes early Saturday morning following a vehicle crashing into an above ground Kansas Gas Service pipe. The incident occurred in the area of Eleventh Street and Wood Street. The impact caused a major gas leak.Just before 4 a.m.

Weir Elementary may face wrecking ball

The price tag of repairing Cherokee County’s oldest operating school building appears to be sending it to the wrecker’s ball.Discussions at a public meeting on Saturday evening with patrons of USD 247 seemed to leave few options except demolition of the 109-year old Weir Elementary School building.

Patrick Michael Griffith, 50, was admitted to the Cherokee County Law Enforcement Center on a court ordered commitment.Sterling Reece, 49, was arrested Wednesday by Wyandotte Nation on charges of failure to appear and is being held in lieu $500 bail.
