Library adds security feature

In an effort to make the Columbus library more secure, they have added a simple new access step at the south entrance only.Patrons are asked to press the touchscreen, speak to the front desk and wait for the door to unlock.Using the new entry steps will keep the space safe and welcoming to all.

Tonight at the Columbus Genealogy Society will host speakers from the Orphan Train Complex in Concordia. The train left children throughout Kansas including several in Cherokee County. Most of the children were from the streets and orphanages of New York City.

The Orphan Train Exhibit is currently on display in the local Genealogical Library and visitors have been impressed by the exhibit.A special program about the Orphan Train tonight, Tuesday, August 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the Genealogy Library.Tonight there will be four speakers.

Bicknell files suit in theme park endeavour

Local area entrepreneur and long time businessman O. Gene Bicknell, 91, filed an eight count civil suit in Tulsa federal court (Northern District of Oklahoma) on July 25 against three associates claiming fraud, civil conspiracy, and two violations of the RICO Act.

Bridge contract signed by county

A contract to inspect the condition 238 bridges in Cherokee County was signed Monday by the Cherokee County Commissioners.The contract with Kirkham Michael and Associates set the cost at $187.80 for each bridge inspected and a total cost of $44,696.40.

Health department offers lead tests

A two-day event to help encourage checking local children for high lead blood levels in their blood has been scheduled by the Cherokee County Health Department.The Health Department has partnered with the Sunflower Health Plan which is available through Medicaid.

Model railroad show at Joplin Museum

A model railroad show and swap meet is scheduled Saturday, August 9 at the Joplin History and Mineral Museum.There will be operating layouts and swap tables. Admission is $5 for adults and children under 12 is free.The museum is located at 504 S.

Advantage Metals closes Columbus site

Advantage Metals Recycling, the largest scrap metal recycling company in Kansas and Missouri has closed their operation north of Columbus on Highway 7.The business in Fort Scott has apparently remained open. They also closed their operation in Emporia.

Liberty helicopter flying over area

A helicopter surveys about 1,300 miles of Liberty Electric Company’s transmission lines to spot potential issues with structures, hardware, conductors, and vegetation.The low flying helicopters have been flying the last few days over the service area in Cherokee County.
