City ‘bed tax’ losing collectors

The City Council approved donating $2,500 to the Columbus Chamber of Commerce for the Columbus Days Balloon Festival to help pay for the required insurance.The income from the “city bed tax” which supports some of the Chamber of Commerce activities is drying up according to Mayor Grant Spieth.

Recycle bin has new location

Can’t find the Columbus Recycling bins?They have been moved to the city’s Animal Shelter area. The bins are still available but are in a more convenient area for handling.The move was announced at the City Council meeting on Monday

Five teachers retire from USD 493

Five teachers and three other USD 493 employees and one superintendent retired this year with the close of school.The teachers included Naomi Goforth retired after 31 years as Kindergarten and Title-One teacher at Park School.Linda Griffitt retired after 40 years.

The Cherokee County 4-H Clubs will hold their annual building fundraiser Wednesday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.Visitors are invited to enjoy a good meal at the building and see the improvements that have been accomplished and see what they plan to do.
The prestigious Louis Armstrong Jazz Award was presented to Ruby Stover during the Columbus High School Titan Band Spring Concert May 4. Stover also received the award for Most Spirited. Band director Gae Phillips presented the awards.
