Reflecting on the long legacy of democratic activity in southeast Kansas the Cherokee County Democrat Central Committee unanimously chose Betty McBride as the recipient of the first Outstanding Democrat award.

The Kansas Supreme Court appointed District Judge Kurtis Loy to serve as chief judge of the 11th Judicial District from April 7 through December 31.Loy fills the unexpired term of Judge Lori Bolton Fleming, who was appointed to the Kansas Court of Appeals.

Spears announce birth of daughter

Taylor and Sydnee Spear, Columbus, announce the arrival of their daughter, Scottie Ray, March 19 at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, Mo.Scottie spent two weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit following her early arrival. She weighed four pounds, 13 ounces and was 18 inches long.
