The 100-year old water standpipe located in Lion’s Park across the street from the Mercy Columbus Hospital has a new top. Due to deterioration, the top third of the water tank was leaking. The company made a new top which will be welded to the bottom of the old standpipe.

Cemetery bridge gets state funding

The application to the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to fund the repair of the bridge on Wyandotte Road .08 miles east of Columbus has been approved.

Football contest top player announced

The winner of last weeks Columbus Merchants Football contest was rural McCune resident Ralph Moyer as he missed only two of the 17 contested games Thursday and Friday nights. Second place went to Lottie Bass as she missed three and third place went to Robin Jessee.

Prizeweek consolation prize winner

There was no grand prize winner in the Prizeweek Puzzle contest last week. The consolation winner was Ralph Moyer, of McCune. He also won the Columbus Merchants Football Contest this week. Moyer missed just one on the puzzle contest.

Columbus enrollment shows 25 increase

Each year on September 20, all the schools in Kansas set their enrollment for which they receive state funding. Only one school in the county reported an increase in enrollment in Cherokee County, Columbus had an increased by 25 students to a total enrollment of 879.

Junior soccer causes one-way traffic plan

Due to increased traffic and safety concerns on Crossland Lane during Saturday soccer seasons, the Columbus City Council made a decision that traffic on at Eddington Park shall be one-way, east-to-west, from North Riverside Drive to 20th Street every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

High School Street project nears asphalt installation

The cement work, curbs, gutters and sidewalks will be finished on High School Street tomorrow according to City Street, Alley and Park superintendent Randy Coble. He told the City Council Monday evening the laying of the asphalt would also begin on Wednesday.
