Most stressful time for calves is weaning time

Weaning is stressful for calves, cows and people and very likely the most stressful time in a calf’s life. We know the calf will have all it needs to survive and thrive, but the calf doesn’t know that yet. Just as with humans, less stress leads to more thriftiness and reduced illness.

Barricaded man surrenders without incident

At approximately 7:26 a.m. Wednesday, troopers with Kansas Highway Patrol Troop H out of Chanute, spotted a vehicle make a traffic violation in the area of Stippeville. Troopers attempted to initiate a car stop and the vehicle fled.

Shots fired during altercation in county

An altercation over money and equipment resulted in gunfire and a knife allegedly being brandished Wednesday evening. Just after 8 p.m., Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a home outside of Baxter Springs following a potentially deadly disturbance.
The Cherokee County Economic Development Commission recognized four local businesses for the contributions to the county and it’s growth and development. The awards included Sally Davis, Davis Real Estate, Larry Hiatt, Columbus News-Report, Jerry Derfelt, Derfelt Funeral Homes and Dr. Kayla Riggs of Riggs Chiropractic.
