Last day to nominate businesses

Today is the final day to nominate outstanding local businesses/organizations for the awards being presented by the Cherokee County Economic Development Corporation. The awards will be presented at the Annual Recognition Breakfast September 15.

Two arrested on drug, stolen property charges

A stolen vehicle and suspected narcotics were discovered by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies at a Weir home Sunday. The deputies executed a search warrant at 208 East Wood Street, where a 2019 Chevy Malibu, which had previously been reported stolen, was recovered.

Columbus welcomes new activity facility

The local community turned out by the hundreds to the open house ribbon cutting of the new Red Iron Recreation Center and Virginia Crossland Early Childhood Center adding a major attraction to the city. Classes will begin August 17, including Pickleball 101, with Ronnie Johnson as the instructor.

City okays sale of $1 million bonds

The sale of $1.787-million in General Obligation bonds was approved by the Columbus City Council Monday night to pay for the High School street project. Most of the funds will go to the cost of updating the water and sewer portion of the project.

In recognition of her achievements in horticulture, Ryleigh Holmes was presented the Buck’s Green Thumb award at the Cherokee County Fair. Holmes is a member of the Spring Valley Sarklers 4-H Club. Anne Sharp presented the award. Sharp is president of the Fair Board.

Jake Finis Kanmore, 45, was arrested Sunday by Baxter Springs Police officers on three warrants and is being held without bail. Cody Adam Whetzell, 38, was arrested Sunday by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies on charges of driving under the influence and was released on $1,000 bail.

Hane Baftiri, 18, was arrested Friday by Chetopa Police officers on charges of possession of marijuana and was released on $600 bail. Steven Arthur George, 44, was arrested Thursday by Oswego Police officers on charges of driving while suspended and is being held in lieu of $478.50 bail.
