Kansas Department of Transportation workers were painting warnings on the roadway at Kansas Highway 7 and U.S. 160 that tell drivers there is a stop sign ahead. Local officials had requested “rumble strips” be put in place as there are on other four-way stops on Highway 7.

Local Girl Scout leads anti-smoking campaign

If you think smoking is part of a bygone, “Mad Men” era, think again. Young people, in particular, are still very much at risk. Every day in the United States more than 2,600 youth under age 18 smoke their first cigarette, and nearly 600 youth under age 18 become daily smokers.

Pittsburg casino revenue increases over last year

The revenue of Kansas Crossing Casino increased again in June 2021 over the 2020 comparable month. The Pittsburg casino reported a revenue of $2,950,766 with Cherokee County receiving $29,507.66 for the month of June. In 2020 Cherokee County received $24,023.

KDOT warning is painted on road

Concerns by city and county officials about the high number of accidents and near accidents on Highway K-7 and U.S. 160 brought action by the Kansas Department of Transportation. However, it is thought the local officials might feel the action was less than needed to make the intersection safer.

Prizeweek Puzzle consolation winner

City of Columbus Court Docket

The following persons are scheduled to appear before Judge John Bullard in Columbus Municipal Court Monday, July 12 at 4 p.m. Shaeley L. Applegate, 21, Columbus, is scheduled for an initial appearance on charges of running at large, vicious animal and vaccines required.

Area Accident Report

A one vehicle accident occurred July 7 at approximately 7:14 a.m. on US Highway 69 at milepost 98 or 2,140 feet east of 1800 Road in Linn County. A 2008 Ford SUV driven by Cody D. Siegel, 35, Cherokee, was traveling north on US Highway 69.
