Tyler Haywood took first place in the 5K run as he crossed the finish line in 21.39-minutes he was the top male runner.

Commissioners okay Opportunity Zone

Approval of participation in the state’s Rural Opportunity Zone program was given Monday when the Cherokee County Commissioners passed a resolution confirming the plan for the county.. The program provides student loan forgiveness and income tax waivers to those who relocate to rural areas.

Workmen remove dangerous tree on Minnesota Street

The large Pin Oak tree that was stretching over the roadway on South Minnesota between Pine and Elm streets was removed Wednesday. One of the large branches was cut away and fell completely across Minnesota Street. Had that limb alone fallen it would have crushed a car.

Labette County Jail Report

Clarissa Anne Turnbough, 30, was arrested Tuesday by Chetopa Police officers on charges of driving while suspended and interference with law enforcement and is being held in lieu of $800 bail.

Cherokee County Jail Report

Lisa Renee Minor, 46, was arrested Thursday by Baxter Springs Police officers on charges of disorderly conduct; fighting words or noisy conduct and interference with law enforcement nd is being held in lieu of $420 bail.

Child tax credit payments: Plan ahead now

For over 36 million households with dependents age 17 and under, bank accounts will see some extra green starting in just a few weeks. The American Rescue Plan increased child tax credits from $2000 per child to up to $3600 for the tax year 2021.
