A number of people turned out recently for a day of community clean up and planting. Cherri Chancellor, Christina Holmes, Rebecca Dobyns, Susan Schultz and Julie Thomas were busy planting seeds in the Community Garden.

Sheriff issues activity report

A decrease in all crime arrests was reported by Sheriff David Groves in his quarterly activity report to the County Commission. The Sheriff reported a 26.6 percent decrease in domestic battery, a 40.91-percent decrease in thefts and a 26.

Members of the Baxter Springs Kiwanis Club were busy over the week-end working on the walking bridge at the Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Historical Museum. The wet weather prevented some of the work but the banks of Spring Creek were cleaned. A new deck is planned for the bridge.

The second annual Cherokee County Summer Virtual Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge has been announced by the Cherokee County Economic Development Corporation.

Unemployment dips to 3.4% in county

Unemployment in Cherokee County continues to remain the lowest in Southeastern Kansas. March is the second successive month the unemployment rate in the county has been 3.4-percent. The total number of people employed in the county in March of 2021 was 9,750 and 347 unemployed.
