Students at Central celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss recently. They heard stories written by the author, played games and created crafts themed around his books. Jace Gaither had just been decorating cookies with various Seuss designs.

League of Municipalities to hold essay contest

The League of Kansas Municipalities invites any seventh grade student in Kansas to participate in the “My City, My Home” essay contest. Each student can enter one typed essay with up to 500 words, the deadline to enter is April 30. For full contest details visit www.lkm.org/page/essaycontest.

Amy Christine Kelly, 48, was arrested Monday by Galena Police officers on charges of failure to appear and is being held in lieu of $2,500 bail. Bazil Vance Hudson, 28, was arrested Monday by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies on charges of failure to appear and is being held without bail.

Area fire crews were busy most of the day Monday with a grass fire on Forest Ave. in the Empire area of Galena. Six departments, 15 emergency units and more than 25 firefighters responded to the blaze.

Superintendent’s contract extended

The contract of Superintendent Dr. Brian Smith was extended by the Columbus USD493 Board of Education through the 2022-23 school year at their meeting Monday evening. The board also extended the work agree ment of Stacy Edmondson as transportation assistant through July 1, 2021.

Speaking to the Columbus Chamber of Commerce Monday morning State Representative Mike Houser said this has been a different year in the state legislature.

CUHS graduation plans given board

“There will be a prom this year and we will do everything we can to make it an enjoyable evening for the participants,” said Columbus High School Principal Dan Grundy. “But, we also want to encourage social distancing even though it may be a difficult situation.
