Hershel ‘Rex’ Wing, Weir, 89

Hershel “Rex” Wing, 89, of Weir, died February 20, 2023, at Carrington Place Residential Care in Pittsburg. Born August 16, 1933 in Elbing, Rex was the son of Ralph and Flossie Wing. Rex was united in marriage to Peggy J. Turner May 28, 1951. She preceded him in death June 12, 2000.

David Duane Mays, Weir, 51

David Duane Mays, 51, of Weir died Friday, February 17, 2023. Born January 13, 1972 in Girard, David was the son of Keral Mays and Linda Mills. David worked as a diesel mechanic at Petro Mechanic Shop in Joplin, Mo. David loved his family more than life itself.

Betty J. Houston

Betty J. Houston, 93, of rural Altamont, died at 2:05 a.m., Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Oswego Health and Rehab in Oswego. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verl L. Houston, on October 7, 1978.

Huey York

Huey Monroe York 83, died Saturday, February 18, 2023 at his home in Baxter Springs. Born at 9:20 a.m. January 8, 1940, at 525 Ottawa in Baxter Springs, Huey was the son of W.O. (Bill) and Geneva York.

Helen Leota Curran

Helen Leota Curran, age 88, Joplin, died Thursday, February 16, 2023 at a local nursing home. Born February 4, 1935 in Joplin, Mo., Helen was the daughter of Curtis Howerton and Roxie (Adkins) Howerton-Stites.

Billy W. Roark

Billy W. Roark (Bill), 82 of Columbus, died Friday, February 17, 2023 at Freeman Hospital. Born July 19, 1940, in Columbus, Bill was the son of CoNorma (Correll) and Lester Roark. He graduated from Cherokee County Community High School with the class of 1958.

Raymond Collins

Raymond Eugene Collins, age 77 died at 4:28 am, Sunday, February 19, 2023 at Oswego Health and Rehab, following an illness. Born January 12, 1946 in Parsons, Raymond was the son of Bud and Myrtle (Gross) Collins. He was a lifetime resident of Labette County.

Mary Jolene Carroll

Mary Jolene (Jo) Carroll 85, died February 15, 2023. Born July 28, 1937 in Abilene, Mary was the daughter of Dr. Frank Callahan and Hazel (Parks) Callahan. Jolene was a gentle, kind and prayerful person. She attended Abilene schools, graduating in 1955.
