Baxter Springs man pleads guilty to insurance fraud

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt, announced a Cherokee county man has been sentenced to 12 months of probation for insurance fraud.William Owens, age 71, Baxter Springs, pleaded guilty in Cherokee County District Court to one felony count of insurance fraud.

Methodist Women present check to Mercy Auxiliary

The Columbus Methodist Women presented Columbus Mercy Auxiliary a check for $1,000 towards their campaign for the purchase of a 3-D mammography machine.The hospital had a mobile mammography machine for several years. The new machine will be housed in the Columbus Mercy Hospital.

The earliest known owner of the 1914 CASE 65 HP Steam Tractor was the Albertson family near Scammon, where it was used in threshing. Wilkinson Coal Company purchased it in the late 1930’s to power a pump, to pump water out of the strip pits so they could mine coal.

Route 66 travelers were not lost

This month was very different than the last two. We had time to catch up some.We had fewer visitors. There were two gentlemen that I thought were lost. They were traveling Route 66. I knew that the museum had not moved and I was pretty sure Route 66 had good but not that good.

not moved either. So, I said “but the museum is not on Route 66.” They laughed and said, “we know that, but we read about the ball of string in a travel magazine and had to see it.” They made a quick tour of the museum and headed west to continue their tour of Route 66.
